Why seat height is more important than seat area
Of all the dimensions of a piece of seating, the seat is the most likely to be looked at and the seat height is the most likely to be overlooked. The area is negotiable and the height is not. At the dining table, a distance of 28 to 30 cm between the seat and the bottom edge of the table is the guideline, and almost everything else follows from this.
A table height of 75 cm therefore pairs with a seat height of 45 cm. ZEN BENCH and T-STOOL follow this dimension. If the gap is smaller, your thighs meet the underside of the table as you move closer. If it is larger, your shoulders rise to bring your forearms up to the tabletop. Two centimetres can make an hour at the table feel much longer.
Away from the table, the math changes. Where people sit for longer periods of time, the seat can be lower. In front of a bed, a bench is adjusted to the height of the mattress. In the hallway, on the other hand, people sit to tie their shoes, and there the higher seat is the easier one: more like 45 cm than 40 cm, because from 45 cm you also have to stand up with your back bent, from 40 cm you only have to swing.
Measuring seat height before buying rather than guessing avoids a problem that nobody likes admitting later. The matching Dining tables come from the same workshop, as do the Consoles for the hallway. What connects them to the seating is a tape measure, not a catalogue. The distance between two edges determines what works together, not a photograph.
The three shapes in the range
ZEN BENCH carries one continuous seat on two triangular supports in brushed stainless steel, measuring 200 × 35 × 45 cm. No crossbar divides the space between the supports, so feet can move back beneath the bench, which matters when standing up. At 35 cm deep, the surface is narrower than an upholstered bench; it supports the body where it sits, not where it might lean.
This narrowness is a decision for sitting upright. If you sit 35 cm back, you are still sitting in front, and your back remains doing the work that you are already doing at the table. Under a window or at the foot of a bed, the bench changes its role and maintains its position.
T-STOOL measures 30 × 30 × 45 cm, a stool that is a square from above. On a 30 cm surface you don't sit, but take a seat: your legs are bent, your upper body is upright, your hands are free. It's the shape for places where a chair would be too demanding, next to the sink, in the hallway, by a window.
TUKKON CHAIR is designed for reclining: an upholstered seat on a bent-sheet-metal base, in patinated brass or brushed stainless steel, 66.5 cm high. Its seat height is available on request. What separates it from bench and stool is not the upholstery but permission to let the back rest. Three forms that do not replace one another, held together by the same material language.
Designer chairs without changing the collection
Seating makes differences noticeable in ways that other furniture does not. A shelf two centimetres deeper than the one beside it rarely attracts attention. A seat two centimetres higher than the others at the same table is noticeable at the first dinner. Adding seating is therefore particularly delicate: the new piece needs more than a similar appearance. It needs to feel right from the moment you sit down.
The market makes that difficult. Models are replaced every few years, successors get a new seat height, a different angle, a different upholstery, and anyone looking for a fourth piece of three will find a piece of furniture that is like the old one and feels different. There is no season here. The manufacturer has been working with the same two materials since 2000. A piece once drawn is later built from the same drawing, with the same dimensions.
There is one limitation, and it doesn't concern the dimensions, but the tone. The brushed stainless steel that the bench is made of can be repeated years later. Patinated brass, which is available in the lounge chair, is a little different for each piece; A second one, made later, is similar in shape to the first and slightly different in tone. This doesn't matter when it comes to sitting. For the coexistence, yes.
This turns a question of availability into a question of attitude. A piece of seating furniture that will still be available in ten years does not have to be purchased today in the quantity that might one day be needed. It is enough to start with the piece that is now missing. The rest can wait without the manufacturer forgetting about them.
Custom seat height and how to order
The most common special request in this category is not a shape, but a number. An existing table is a few centimeters lower than usual, a niche has a certain length, a hallway has no space for 200 cm. All three cases boil down to the same request: the same bench, in different dimensions.
In a workshop that makes each piece individually, a different measurement does not change the process, only the drawing. Length, depth and seat height are free; Material thickness and shape of the supports follow the dimensions. At the beginning there is a drawing with the three numbers, then a binding price, and only after approval is the sheet metal cut.
The bench, stool or chair arrives five to six weeks later. The shipping company brings the item to the curb; there are no shipping costs; There is a right of return of two weeks for items in stock. This is the time that a seat takes if it is not taken from a shelf but made for a specific table.
You can check what 45 cm feels like at home before ordering: an existing chair, a tape measure and your own table. Measuring the distance to the table's underside tells you more about future seating than a photograph can. One question remains beyond measurement: whether your own body can settle comfortably at that height.
